The more we hold or hold back, the less generous we become

May the Lord bless you with peace and health in the Holy Spirit.

It is 8th July 2021.

We reflect from Genesis 44:18-21, 23-29, 45:1-5 and the Gospel from Matthew 10:7-15.

The more we hold or hold back, the less generous we become.

An anonymous saying goes this way: “Holding on to anger is like holding a hot charcoal with the intent of harming another; you end up getting burned.”

Joseph remains a model for generosity to his own brothers who wished him only evil and death. Blessings are piled up in our life-giving generously to all even to those who have hurt us and been an obstacle to us in our lives.

The power to forgive is the gift of the generosity of the heart.  More we give, more resilient in forgiving others.

Jesus expects from each one of us, the missionary disciples that we need to be generous just because God has not withheld anything from us.

“Shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.” (Mt. 10:14).  This has a lot of implications in our personal life.  Without shaking off hurts, ill-treatments, prejudices, we cannot move on to another higher level of being generous.  We all acquired dust by mere walking, living, relating, and working.  Dust here means feelings and mindset we acquired by going through painful ill-treatment and indifference. We all have enough dust to clean up.  It is in no way going to help us carrying the dust of the workplaces to homes and vice versa.

Through the power of the Sacraments, we are all empowered to help, heal, and hand over the best we have received this far.  We all have the tendency to have more and much more and many more still feel we have not got enough.

As we read the missionary discourse, Jesus lays down the attitudes to the disciples that they need to have a generous heart in reaching out to people.  Healer, heal thyself.

God’s love and compassion will remain in letters unless it is demonstrated in our selfless giving.  May you have a day full of blessings by giving the best you have to someone who made you feel cringing and crying.  God bless you.
