It is 28th December 2015. We celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents, the Martyrs. The readings are from 1 John 1:5-2:2 and the Gospel from Matthew 2:13-18. We venerate the innocent infants massacred by King Herod in Bethlehem and its surroundings. Herod wanted to eliminate the ‘infant King and Saviour Jesus.’ The most painful episode at the birth of Jesus. These innocent children bore witness to Christ even in their helpless conditions. “Behold those redeemed as the first fruits of the human race for God and the Lamb, and who follow the Lamb wherever He goes.” (Rev.14:4). The first reading reminds us to live as children of the light. In any case if we sin, the Lord himself will be there to make us return to God. God is concerned about our behaviour of refusal to admit our sins and consequently continue to live in darkness. We try our level best to hide our sins and damaging the inner souls all the more and depriving the light of God to shine in our dark portions of our being. The responsorial Psalm prays, “Our soul has been rescued like a bird from the fowler’s snare.” (Ps.124:7). The Gospel describes the painful flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. The holy innocents shielded the new born Jesus by giving their lives to the dark and avenging personification of evil. Even in our helpless, and odd moments of our human conditions, we can live for Christ. We need not be powerful and resourceful in order to be the witness for Christ. May God protect our children. Have a good day.
