The readings are from Jeremiah 18:18-20; and the Gospel from Matthew 20:17-28.
We wonder at times why people plot against a good person?
The plotting of Jeremiah reminds us of what Christ would go through.
The story of Jeremiah and Jesus continues in our lives too. Someone we recommended, promoted, befriended have become the one who dug the pit for our falling. Close associates like our family members, comrades, friends turn against us suddenly and vow to get rid of us. We need to be aware of the indifference and indecency in treating and responding our stance in sharing and standing for truth.
People plot against us for many reasons. One that is common to climb the ladder of fame, prestige, status sacrificing the other no matter how close and intimate the person is.
Where can we turn to other than God? God protects and provides us when we are hunted after for being good, just, and truthful. A voluntary and voluminous service to the humanity even amidst all opposition and conflicts can surely provide a way out. Because we cannot stop the other person who wants to be at the helm of affairs at all cost.
The responsorial Psalm praises, “Save me, O Lord, in your steadfast love.” (Ps.36:5).
Some of us love places of honour, and positions. In the Gospel, as Jesus announces His imminent passion and death, He warns those who seek to control others. To be a leader comes with a cost. It is the cost of losing oneself and dissolving the pride to the core and willing to serve. “Whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mt.20:28).
