The readings are from Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28; and the Gospel from Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46.
There is a parallel and echo between the story of Joseph in the first reading and Jesus in the Gospel. We witness the theme of rejection, plotting and trial to kill in both stories. Joseph was either sold to the foreigners for 40 silver while Jesus was sold for 30 coins. Like the dreamer Joseph, Jesus dreamt of life with the values of the Kingdom of God rejected by many. Both Joseph and Jesus are, the “stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone.” (Ps. 118:22).
No matter what, whatever people do to us, God has a great plan for us all. We can be rejected and side-lined even crucified due to jealousy, pride, and politics of people yet God makes us the keystone in all we do and speak. Jealousy and hatred are displayed even in the closest circle of love and relationship murdering trust and truth.
The responsorial Psalm reminds us, “Remember the marvels the Lord has done.” (Ps.105:5).
In the first reading and in the Gospel, we witness the plot against Joseph and Jesus. “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits.” (Gen.37:20) and in the Gospel, “This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.” (Mt. 21:38).
Standing for truth costs life. Truth is the most valuable ornament for the charm and character of a person. Just because a few would like to taste truth, many remain untouched by it. The murder of Jesus and the son of the vineyard’s owner are killed due to greed, comparison, and refusal to give the other what is due.
