It is 22nd November 2015. We celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This feast has a historical background. Right after the First World War, Secularism and Dictorship were on the rise. The need to reaffirm and restate faith and respect for the kingship of Jesus was so prevalent among God’s people. Pope Pius XI instituted the feast in 1925 and observed on the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Kingship of Christ permeates all spheres of lives. Christ Jesus is God and ruler of our lives. Christ is the one redeems us from sinful living. Christ is the Head of the Church. And so Christ enjoys being God, Redeemer and the Head. Christ is supreme, universal, eternal and spiritual king of our lives. The readings are from Dan.7:13-14; Rev.1:5-8 and the Gospel from Jn.18:33b-37. The first reading comforts us with the coming of Son of Man who has the power and dominion over everything. “His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.” (Dn.7:14). The responsorial Psalm praises, “The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.” (Ps.93:1). The second reading confirms so strongly the coming of Jesus from above. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty,” says the Lord God. (Rev.1:8). The Gospel points out that Pilate called Jesus as king. Jesus through His self-giving remains King today and the days to come. Let us pray for the Kingdom of God to come among us.
