It is 03rd January 2016. We celebrate the solemnity of Epiphany of the Lord. The readings are from Is.60:1-6; Eph.3:2-3a, 5-6 and the Gospel from Mt. 2:1-12. Epiphany means appearance or manifestation. God appears to God’s people those who believe God and those who yet to believe God. . It is also called Theophany which means the Manifestation, God’s revealing as Messiah and Saviour. The first reading speaks about the restoration of New Jerusalem. God will appear to all people. As they return from the exile to New Jerusalem, the people will bring the priceless gifts to God. They shall bring gold for the Temple and frankincense for the sacrifice. In the second reading St. Paul beautifully brings out two parts of the mystery. The first one highlights God’s plan of salvation in Christ. Second one includes both Jews and the rest in divine plan. All are called to be members of the body of Christ and all enjoy the promises God made to Israel. The Gospel presents the three Magi, the three scholars namely Gaspar, Balthazar, and Melchior. The name Caspar means treasurer, Melchior meaning splendour, Balthazar means God protect the king. The three of them brought three gifts which had a spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense or incense as a symbol of priesthood, and myrrh, the embalming oil as a symbol of death. God continues to reveal God’s own self in God’s beloved Son Jesus. Jesus is the light of the world. Without having known, loved, experienced, believed in Jesus, there is no way we can experience God. There is no one is an alien to God. The light of Jesus falls on all and there is no cloud can hide this ever permeating light. We cannot hide ourselves from the love of Jesus. May God bless you.
