It is 16th March 2017. The readings are from Jeremiah 17:5-10; and the Gospel from Luke 16:19-31. In the first reading Jeremiah speaks about two kinds of people. One type solely believes in their own flesh and their riches and the other type of people are the ones who put their entire trust in God and depend on God for their existence and sustenance. The evil person does not recognize the goodness and blessings of God because of his/her ever-growing longing to please the flesh always and to have willful forgetfulness of God. Their spiritual life is like a desert, like a salty land with no life possible at all. Their entire life seems to be like a wasteland and the wilderness. On the contrary, there is abundance of blessings on those who trust in the Lord. They are the perennial givers of the goodness and kindness to the rest of the humanity. They never lack or complain by giving and sacrificing. Selfishness and greedy world never make them tired in their giving. They go on running like a stream that removes the dirt of the ground and purifies the land by their unstoppable sacrifice-filled living and giving. Their life is indeed a stream of hope, love, peace and joy in the fiber nerves of humanity. There is no panic in these generous and ever sacrificing people in the society. They are ever fruitful and have inner power to withstand any amount of winds and heat of the selfish people. “I the Lord search the mind and try the heart, to give to every person according to his/her ways, according to the fruit of his/her doings.” (Jer.17:10). The responsorial Psalm prays, “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.” (Ps.39:5). The Gospel presents us with the parable Lazarus, the poor man and the unnamed rich man. The riches and wealth brings a type of mentality and attitude that disturbs the peace, goodness, self-respect, confidence of the poor. The attitude of the rich not only distances them from the poor ultimately God himself. The pity is the rich never notice the vast gap the power of money and wealth could create between them and the poor. The wealth, the riches and the power is given to us to make the other person powerful and to gain their dignity. In this sacred giving one cleans and purifies the dirt within and around as we begin to notice the bruised Jesus in the broken and battered humanity. We need to be careful not to fall into the hell of self-centeredness and selfishness. We are here to create heaven on earth by our selfless giving for those who feel the indifferences of the selfish society.
