It is 6th February 2020. We celebrate the memorial of Sts. Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs. The readings are from 1 Kings 2:1-4, 10-12 and the Gospel from Mark 6:7-13. Timely advise saves the child and develops the child integrally. Those who have not followed the ideals during their life time here on earth will leave a legacy for their children wait until the end of their life. We do not need to wait until death to impart the moral codes and ethical way of life to our children. The difference between David and Jesus was that what David could not live passed on to his son Solomon while Jesus sent the disciples to do what He was doing already to preach, teach, heal, share and care for all people. David said to his son Solomon in the first reading, “Be strong, keeping the Lord’s commandments.” (1 Kgs.2:3). Children need to be given appropriate and ample guidance right from the start. Pampered children are a liability to the family and to the society some way sometime and they tend become ill-mannered children at times. David had no time for his son Solomon while he grew up due to various circumstances he had to face as a king. A home is lost when the father has no time for the family. Even if we become so busy in our life, we must never neglect the parental duty for the sake of the children. David offered a parting advice to Solomon. A father who lives ethically and spiritually gives timely and appropriate advice to his children. The responsorial Psalm praises, “You, Lord, are the ruler of all.” (1 Chron.29:12). In the Gospel Jesus sent out his disciples to continue what He was doing. We are the disciples of Christ on the move. We are the ambassadors and representative of the Good News without putting trust in material things rather to rely on God. “So they set off to preach repentance; and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.” (Mk.6:13). Our greatness comes in our work and fidelity to the mission and the Gospel. May the Lord help us to leave a legacy we have lived and practiced than to leave an ideal that is unreachable by human means. May you have a good day. God bless you.
