It is 10th March 2015. The readings are from Dan.3:25,34-43a and the Gospel from Mt. 18:21-35. The first reading is a prayer of Azariah for mercy from the furnace oven. He prayed that why must God be merciful to himself and for his people who are in captivity. “Do not put us to shame, but deal with us in your patience and abundant mercy.” (Dan.3:42). The Responsorial Psalm reminding God His mercy, “Remember your mercies, O Lord.” (Ps.25:6a). The Gospel challenges us our attitude to forgiveness. “Lord, how many times, shall I forgive my brother (sister) when he (she) sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “Not seven times but seventy-seven times.” (Mt. 18:21,22). We are admonished from this reading that we must not have a track record of forgiveness. There is no balance sheet of acts in dealing with forgiveness. Forgiveness is God’s mercy displayed in human form. When we forgive, we bring out the spiritual side of whom we believe. Unforgiving is satanic and evil which will lead the communities and individuals to divide and create chaos. There is no perfect numbering or quality in forgiving someone. Unforgiving moments brings lot of bodily complications culminating in perennial sickness. God wants us to forgive others no matter what it takes. Lent is the time to settle accounts with others. It is time not only to return to God and to our brothers and sisters who hurt us time and time again. The way we treat others is the way God treats us. “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” (Mt.18:35).
