It is 07th June 2015. We celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is three feasts in one: the feast of the Eucharistic sacrifice, the feast of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the feast of the Real Presence of Jesus. Corpus Christi is the celebration of the abiding presence of a loving God who is with us always. It is one of the precious gifts our Lord Jesus given to us. We are invited to reflect more deeply on the “Real Presence” of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The readings are from Exod.24:3-8; Heb.9:11-15 and the Gospel from Mk.14:12-16,22-26. The first reading describes the God’s special love for God’s people through covenantal commitment. God has given the entire presence and blessing through this covenant to people of Israel. The second reading reminds us that the offertory of the Blood of Jesus is the new Covenant. The responsorial Psalm prays, “I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord.” (Ps.116:13). In the Gospel, we are strengthened once again to participate in Christ’s sacrifice so as to worship the triune God. Jesus replaced the old Covenant with the New Covenant sealed through His own Blood. We believe in this transformation of bread and wine called Transubstantiation. The Eucharist is the Sacrament of union with God. It is a sacrifice because it is the re-presentation or re-living Christ’s death. It is indeed a great mystery. It is in the Eucharist we meet Jesus as a real person and communicate with Him. What we eat so we become. We eat the Body of Christ and so eventually we become the Body of Christ as St. John Chrysostom pointed out. May the Lord help you to understand the deep meaning of the Eucharist. May God bless you on the feast day of Corpus Christi .
