It is 22nd September 2017. The readings are from 1 Timothy 6:2-12; and the Gospel from Luke 8:1-3. The attitude towards money makes us to connect or disconnect with God and others. There is an attitude attached to the love of money. Most of us are enslaved because of the love of money. Money cannot satisfy the hunger of the soul but it has power to feed the hunger of the world. Greediness of money never dies in a person. More specially for those who hold public positions and responsibilities will be held in honour or disgrace the way one handles the money. The abuse of public funds and a systemic corruption is on the rise in every level these days. The organized looting and stealing the money of the poor is the most hatred evil by God. Abusing Church funds for one’s own welfare of family of origin, friends and personal upliftment is indeed the evil St. Paul warns Timothy in the first reading about the abuse of money by a church leader. Money cannot make a person saintly but surely it can lead one to do all kinds of evil. For money, many people would anything. Money never offers security in fact it robs our personal and community security. More money one has less secure and peaceful one becomes. But the craziness and the race for more money has never stopped. “But, as a man dedicated to God, you must avoid all that. You must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle.” (1 Tim 6:11). The responsorial Psalm praises, “How happy are the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt.5:3). In the Gospel, St. Luke presents a group of women who looked after the needs of Jesus and the Apostles. These made a lot of sacrifices spending their money and resources for the welfare of the mission of Jesus. God has given us the material resources to spread the love of God revealed in Jesus. When we are loyal to Jesus, we will be willing to put all our resources at the welfare of the poor and the needy and more specially for spreading the Good News of the Lord. What do we do with the money God has entrusted to us in our lives? Are we greedy? Or Are we providing the Needy? “And several others who provided for them out of their own resources.” (Lk.8:3). However little money we have, we can still offer it for a noble cause. Let us do something good with the money we have otherwise the same little money will make us to do greater evil in us and around. “The Love of money is the root of all evils.” (1 Tim.6:10). May we be cautious about the desire for more money. May you have a good day.
