It is 12th June 2018. The readings are from 1 Kings 17:7-16, and the Gospel from Matthew 5:13-16. Will we share with someone our frugal resources especially with the stranger? If a human heart has a famine of love, it cannot see the goodness within and around. Where there is love, there must be faith and vice versa. A few people in our communities could only offer those little they have for themselves to the other in need. It is possible for the one who loves and fears God to do such a bold act of mercy and charity. If we have trained our minds to give that little last portion we have ourselves to those who desperately in need, God himself comes down to refill our empty jars and jugs with the abundance. Only in such selfless giving, we become the light and salt to the humanity. In the first reading, we encounter a poor widow who demonstrated her faith and charity to prophet Elijah in the most desperate times of her life. She knew for sure that God would not allow her and her son to die by giving this last morsel of food for their survival. “She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil ail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.” (1 Kgs.17:16). The responsorial Psalm acclaims, “Lift up the light of your face on us, O Lord.” (Ps.4:7). The Gospel reminds us our duty to be the light and salt of the world as we believe in the Lord of light Jesus. Adding taste to the world with our charity, love and generosity and brighten the world around with our moral integrity and ethical living. The light of Christ that shines in our inner being need to be noticed by those whom we meet. May our light add joy and the salt add taste to the community we are in. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Mt.5:16). Are we salted and lighted in Christ? Let us ignite the world with the light of Christ. We need make effort daily to deal and destroy the elements of darkness and sin that makes our light goes dim and our goodness is diminished by the selfish choices and motives. The will not forget us in times of dire need to provide and care when we are selfless and altruistic. May you have a good day.
