It is 19th March 2020. We celebrate the Solemnity of St Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Patron of the Universal Church and unceasing intercessor of all families and the model for all fathers and husbands. He protects and guards Holy Family and every family in the world. He is rightly honored as patron of families, fathers, expectant mothers, explorers, pilgrims, travelers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, happy death, and working people in general. As we are all at home, let us all keep God in front and keep our families united with the powerful intercession of St. Joseph. This time of seclusion, isolation and being confined to a place need to be seen through the spectacles of hope, love and prayer. The readings are from 2 Samuel 7:4-5, 12-14, 16; the second reading is Romans 4:13, 16-18, 22; the Gospel from Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24. There is so much to emulate from the life of St. Joseph. He was humble enough to be called the husband of Mary, the Ever Virgin. He was just, righteous, man of integrity and model for the spouses. The first reading recounts that the promise made to the prophet Samuel that he were impeccable in character so that God could entrust His Only Son to be born David’s line. The second reading insists that Abraham was justified by faith just like St. Joseph. The responsorial Psalm praises, “The son of David will live for ever.” (Ps.89:37). The Gospel invites us to trust the Lord when we do not know the events of life that unfold cannot be explained by reason alone. Every family needs a father like St. Joseph, who cares, commits, and just. It is also a day to make our fathers feel special, loved and remembered dearly. We need to pray for our fathers who loved us immensely with their guidance, goodness and counsel. A husband and father need to be truthful, transparent, honest, and never speak ill of the spouse and children God has entrusted to him. As St. Joseph remained the instrument to bring Jesus into the world, may our actions, beliefs bring out Jesus. May St. Joseph be the model and inspiration for all our families.
