It is 26th March 2020. The readings are from Exodus 32:7-14; and the Gospel from John 5:31-47. Who is praying for us? For whom are we interceding now and with whom? Without the intercessors, we will be all left unaided spiritually. We all have a saint for ourselves to intercede for in our Church. The Catechism teaches us in no. 956, “Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness. They do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus . So, by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped.” In his death bed, St. Dominic told his brothers: “Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life. I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth.” Even if we are not baptized by a Christian saint name, we are in the intercessory circle of a saint whose spiritual guidance and protection is given to all of us. When we feel our prayers are not heard, and more so we feel that God seems to be far from us because of our fallenness and failures, the Spirit of God ignites the flames of prayers on behalf of us in person who lived a holy life. We have an episode in the first reading that Moses became the intercessor for the people who sinned against God when God wanted to punish them on account of their sinful lives. But Moses persisted God to remember the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob not to vent God’s anger on God’s people. “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.” (Ex.32:14). The responsorial Psalm pleading God, “Remember us, O Lord, for the love you have for your people.” (Ps.106:4). The Gospel reminds us how to respond to those who criticizes even after we have done the best we have in our life. Jesus responded to those who refuse to believe Him as the Son of God by continuing to do good to all people. No matter who appreciate and recognize us as persons endowed with potentiality, our stand in promoting and doing good remains as the proof of our faith in Jesus. Let us not waste time defending how good we are rather we need to invest all what we have for the love of humanity at this most challenging time of our life. We do not need to lose any single human heart and relationship with the other just to prove how right and good we are. May all our effort bring someone closer to God and to the heart of Jesus.
