It is 31st March 2021. We are in Holy Week on Spy Wednesday.
The readings are from Isaiah 50:4-9; and the Gospel from Matthew 26:14-25.
As we are about to enter the Triduum, we reflect the third song of the suffering servant of God. The first reading presents us with a graphic picture of suffering servant pointing towards Jesus. Unresisted, yet uncompromised faith in God displayed in the servant. ‘Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also.” (Mt 5:38). The unmatchable suffering servant reminds us of Jesus who was betrayed, denied, and humiliated by those whom he was so close. When our life is focused on God and God’s stand for us, we are not afraid of the suffering rather we sharpen our perception towards the goal and destination to walk towards God. Peace overcomes all pieces of criticism, insults, and betrayal.
The responsorial Psalm intercedes, “Lord, in your great love, answer me.” (Ps.69:14)
“Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” (Mt.26:21). Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus still in most of us. Betrayal happens in every micro level of our relationship especially where money, power and position involved. Some of us would betray what we believe and follow dearly for money or we may side with those who betray our culture, identity, and humanity. We do not betray consciously and maliciously yet the situations and words we speak turn to be the examples and proofs for the betrayal. The calculations of Judas went totally wrong. He wanted Jesus to be a political leader and expected the support of people to be consistent and his love for money more than the master backfired him. Though he was sorry for what he did, he refused to come back to the Lord and ended committing suicide. He could not recognise Jesus as His master and the Lord. When we do not know Jesus and have not bonded with Him, we too will betray Him. May we avoid words, circumstances, relationships that would lead us to betray Jesus. Have a lovely day. God bless you.
