It is 15th May 2015. The readings are from Acts.18:9-18 and the Gospel from Jn.16:20-23. The first reading talks about the ministry of Paul in Corinth for eighteen months. “Do not be afraid to speak out, not allow yourself to be silenced: I am with you. I have so many people on my side in this city that no one will even attempt to hurt you.” (Act.18:9, 10). Corinth is a wicked place yet God protected Paul from any harm. Paul was blamed for preaching an illicit religion. Grace of God works in strange ways. Whenever we are persecuted for our faith and we see the evil all around us, we can feel lonely and isolated. Yet, God will not let us down even in a situation where we are misunderstood and unaccepted. The responsorial Psalm sings, “God is king of all the earth.” (Ps.46:8). The Gospel invites us to reflect on the contrast between the world and the followers of Jesus. “You will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain but your pain will turn into joy.” (Jn.16:20). What the world holds good and valuable is mostly opposite of What God holds good and valuable. So we the believers begin to feel misfit in front of the world. Yes, the world is rejoicing yet there is going to be a day for us when we see Jesus, we will be given the gift of Joy which God alone can offer. “So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.” (Jn. 16:22). Joy is the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Gal.5:22). When we have performed the Christian duty in fullness, we enjoy the moment of joy.
