It is 20th May 2015. It is the memorial of St. Bernardine of Sienna. Confessor, preacher known as Apostle of Italy. He was known for eloquent preaching. He declined three times the bishoprics. He said, “Practise first all that you desire to teach others.” The readings are from Acts.20:28-38 and the Gospel from Jn. 17:11b-19. The first reading continues to reflect the farewell speech of Paul. Paul admonished the leaders to believe that it was the Holy Spirit who gives them the power to do as leaders and therefore they need not be afraid of anyone. He encouraged the leaders to work hard day in and day out for their salvation and of the others never forgetting the poor in their ministry and to be generous in giving. “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.” (Acts. 20:35). The responsorial Psalm sings, “Kingdoms of the earth, sing to God.” (Ps.67:33). In the Gospel, we continue to hear the farewell prayer of Jesus in which He prays for unity. “So that they may be one as we are one.” (Jn.17:11). Jesus prays to the Father for his followers. “Consecrate them in the truth; your word is truth.” (Jn. 17:17). Consecrated means set apart for sacred use, cleaned and made holy. It is through the daily exercises of familiarizing and making the God’s word home, we become pure and holy. It is the truth of the Word of God purifies our minds and lives, pointing out our sinful living, encouraging us to confess our sins and motivates us to relate with God better. Jesus does not want us to run away from the world but He wants us to be used by God through unity, respect and love for other Christians. We are chosen to be the salt and light of the world (Mt. 5:13-16). We need to do what God wants us to do. May you have a peaceful day.
