It is 24th May 2015. We celebrate the Pentecost Sunday. The most ancient feasts of the Church. It is the day the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles and Virgin Mary in the form of tongues after the fifty day of resurrection of Jesus. It is the birthday of the Church. It is the second baptism for us all. The readings are from Acts.2:1-11. Gal. 5:16-25 and the Gospel from Jn.15:26-27; 16:12-15. Come Holy Spirit fill our lives and burn all our evils. The first reading speaks about the detailed first Pentecost which transformed the apostles free from fear, and disappointment. God infuses His spirit into the apostles and the believers. Those who are prepared and receptive hear and feel the movements of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The Holy Spirit came upon them in the form of divided tongues, as of fire, rested on each of the disciples. Divine Love was poured into the hearts of the believers and they understood each other. The second reading reminds us that we who are baptised must believe and behave according to the Spirit of God not pulled in by the carnal spirit of the body. We belong to God, so we need to embrace the spiritual ways of the Spirit of God. We need to overcome the spirit of the flesh and be filled with the gifts that produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The responsorial Psalm prays, “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.” (Ps.104:30). In the Gospel, Jesus offers the Holy Spirit to all of us. Jesus invites us to testify for Him through the help of the Spirit of Truth. “He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.” (Jn. 20:22). May we live by the Spirit of God and share the gift with others.
