It is 25th May 2015 . We celebrate Africa Day. Let us pray for the unity in Africa. The readings are from Sirach 17:24-29 and the Gospel from Mk.10:17-27. The first reading concentrates on the mercy of God. God wants us to repent and return to him leaving our attachments to sin. We will all die one day. Death cannot be avoided by any human person. We can only praise God when we are alive and healthy. “How great is the mercy of the Lord, his pardon on all those who turn towards him.” (Sir.17:29). The responsorial Psalm praises the Lord, “Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord, exult, you just.” (Ps.31:11). The Gospel presents a young man’s wish to enter eternal life. The young man knew the commandments of God yet he found it hard to leave the attachment with money. “One thing you lack, Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me.” (Mk. 10:21). The attachment and love of money is the root of all evils and pride. We find it very hard to let go off the love of money. Money replaces God in some of our lives and becomes so important than God. We need to share our wealth with the others those who are less fortunate than us. Money creates a vacuum in us and so we fill it with new things, new relationships and new connection. Yet, nothing satisfies our hunger for love which God alone can fill it. Self-reliance and self-support become the deficiency to rely on God and God’s providence. Wealth is not the sign of faith. “With men and women this is impossible, but not for God; all things are possible for God.” (Mk.10:27).
