It is 26th May 2015. We celebrate the memorial of St. Philip Neri. The readings are from Sirach 35:1-12 and the Gospel from Mk. 10:28-31. The first reading hails the need for sacrifices made by us. “Honour the Lord with generosity, do not stint the first fruits you bring. Add a smiling face to all your gifts, and be cheerful as you dedicate your tithes.” (Sir.35:10,11). Sacrifice is the outward gift, which may be animal, grain, fruit, and money. Every sacrifice has an intention whether to thank God, or to praise him, to ask him for a special favour or to make good or atone for sin. We acknowledge God’s sovereignty and God accepts it. If the intention is not pure then it becomes a bribe which God rejects it. And therefore, “Do not appear before the Lord empty-handed; for all that you offer is in fulfilment of the commandment.” (Sir.35:6,7). The responsorial Psalm sings, “I will show God’s salvation to the upright.” (Ps.49:23). The Gospel assures that if we make sacrifices, we will be rewarded a hundred-fold. Giving up something for God and the Kingdom of God will be rewarded. Rewards accompany persecutions too. Whatever sacrifices we make for Jesus selflessly, we will be repaid in this world and the world to come. The qualifications to enjoy the reward is the humility to oneself and service to others. Those who are bossing over others, enjoying the positions and powers in this world have none in heaven. Those who humbly serve without expecting anything will be rewarded and be honoured in heaven. What have we given up for Jesus in our lives? Are we serious about making sacrifices and bringing the sacrifices with pure intentions to the Sacred Altar of God? Let us shed away our selfishness and fly with the wings of generosity to the Lord. May you have a blessed day.
