It is 10th March 2016. The readings are from Exodus 32:7-14; and the Gospel from John 5:31-47. The first reading brings out the disbelief and ingratitude of people by erecting the idol of a golden calf and the timely forgiveness of God due to persuasion of Moses. God could have wiped them out altogether for what they have done yet the mercy of God saved them all. What is the molten calf or who is the idol in our lives forgetting such a faithful and merciful God? We create and worship our own molten calves whether it is human or material in nature due to our disbelief. Sometimes we replace God with that of which we made by our mind. The responsorial Psalm prays, “O Lord, remember me out of the love you have for your people.” (Ps.105:4). In the Gospel, we encounter Jesus who claims to be divine which was supported by John the Baptist. Jesus insists our approval must come from our good works not merely from human sources. “For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.” (Jn.5:36). Whenever our actions are approved by God, we feel peaceful, and contentment. In the long run, mere human approval brings so much of disbelief and the absence of peace culminating in greed and pride. We must be careful of the human approval and praises. Does our work point out God? Or have we made our works as another molten calf forgetting all that God is doing through us in our lives?
