It is 3rd September 2016. We celebrate the Memorial of St Gregory the Great, Pope and the Doctor of the Church. The readings are from 1 Corinthians 4:6-15; and the Gospel from Luke 6:1-5. In the first reading, St. Paul reminds the community of Corinth not to be divided because of a preacher. He advised them not to boast about a preacher and to believe him to have the total truth which will not bring unity in the church. On the contrary, all what we have, except our sins, are the gifts from God. Gifts are to be treasured with the respect not to be boasted or bragged about. We simply need to accept that whatever we have is from and God given. In that perspective, we too are the special gifts to others. The responsorial Psalm prays, “The Lord is close to all who call him.” (Ps.144:18). In the Gospel, Jesus reminds them that He has the authority over all including the rules and laws of the Pharisees. “Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Lk.6:5). The primacy of Jesus cannot be ignored while following the details of the laws. What is required of us is to keep the lasting relationship with Jesus, when we are caught up with the demands of the world. We need to be careful not to disregard the fellow human beings in the name of God and religion. We cannot be judgemental and to have a mentality of having all answers in our lives.
