It is 02nd February 2015. The Readings are from Mal. 3:1-4; Heb 2:14-18 and the Gospel from Lk. 2:22-40. We are celebrating the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The First reading discusses about two messengers. Prophet Malaki and John the Baptist prepared the way for the Lord. Jesus is the purifying fire. As we are purified by God through Jesus, the image of God visibly seen in us. We are invited to be open for such purification of the Lord. The Second Reading presents Jesus as a “merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people.” Since Jesus underwent all that we are going through as a human except sin, he is more than able to help us and sympathize with us in times of trials and sufferings. The Responsorial Psalm brings out the glory of the Lord, “Who is the king of glory? It is the Lord.”(Ps. 24:8). In the Gospel we read about the Presentation of the child which is one of the religious requirements of the Jewish family. There were three important ones namely Circumcision of the child, Presentation of the child and Purification of the mother. What we celebrate today is the Presentation of the Lord. A first born son was presented to God one month after birth (Ex 13:2, 11-16). It is getting the child back from God through an offertory. By doing this religious act, the parents acknowledged that the child is the gift from God and belongs to God, who alone gives life. We witness the fulfilment of the first reading, “Suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord you seek.” (Mal.3:1). To present ourselves, we do not need to be rich. Look at Mother Mary who presented her son by offering two pigeons. We are invited to present our very selves to God on a daily basis. As we are grown up, we are expect to present ourselves to God and give due to God for all that we are today. Have a blessed day.
