It is 26th March 2015. The readings are from Gen.17:3-9 and the Gospel from Jn. 8:51-59. The first reading speaks about the covenant God made with Abraham. God’s covenant consists of granting many descendants, continued assistance to the descendants of Abram, giving the land of Canaan and God expected Abraham to obey and circumcise. The responsorial Psalm praises, “The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.” (Ps.104:8). The Gospel presents to us that Jesus is eternal. “If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” (Jn.8:51). There is no spiritual death for someone who will faithfully follow and obey Jesus’s words and will eternally live with Him. After all, we are all to live with God for ever and that is the intention of the Creator. “For God created us for incorruption.” (Wis. 2:23). Jesus himself today assures us about his divinity. Jesus said that he existed before Abraham. “I was born before Abraham.” (Jn.8: 58). Jesus not only claims that he existed before Abraham, but also he declares that He is God. Everyone wants to know who Jesus is. When He declares to us that who He is, we find it hard to accept Him. That is what happened in today’s Gospel. As soon as they heard the statements about Jesus, they wanted to kill him. Our search for Jesus must not remain as a research. Rather it has to become a statements of faith emerges out of the experience we have from the Lord. It is good to broaden our horizon of our vision of Jesus at least during this Lent. May we be humble enough to accept His words and to follow Him as much as we can even amidst the challenges we face in our lives. May God bless you.
