It is 02nd May 2015. We celebrate the memorial of St. Athanasius – Bishop, Doctor of the Church—297-373. The readings are from Acts 13:44-52 and the Gospel from Jn.14:7-14. The first reading speaks about the opposition Paul and Barnabas faced from the Jewish leaders. The apostles preached quoting Is.49:6. “I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.” We the People of God are invited today to be the light for the others as Jesus, the light of the nations (Lk.2:32). St. Luke points out that the resistance to accept the message was due to jealousy. Is our jealousy hindering the God’s work in our communities? The responsorial Psalm praises, “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” (Ps.92:3). The Gospel explains the divinity in its entirety. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. Jesus is the full and complete revelation of how God would look like. Knowing Jesus is knowing the Father. All our quest for God must begin and end in Jesus. Because of our faith in Jesus, we can do many good things. “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing.” (Jn.14:12). We are all here on earth to do good. Refusing and resisting to do good is equally evil as being unjust. Today’s Saint Athanasius tells us, “Justice does not consist merely in not doing anything evil. For not to do good is also evil.” Jesus wants us to ask Him for anything as long as it is the will of God. God cannot grant us anything opposing His nature and character. When we have complete faith in the name of Jesus, we can Jesus. “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (Jn.14:14).
