It is 17th May 2015. It is the Ascension of our Lord. The readings are from Acts.1:1-11; Eph.4:1-13 and the Gospel from Mk. 16:15-20. Having promised the arrival of the Holy Spirit to all those who followed Him, Jesus ascended into His heavenly glory and inviting us to be the witnesses of Him preaching the Gospel of life to all the peoples. The first reading offers the complete details of the Ascension of the Lord in the Acts of the Apostles. Jesus instructed the disciples to remain in Jerusalem to receive the Holy Spirit and be baptised by the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the essential blessing to be a witnesses of the Lord. Jesus ascends into Heaven promising us the Holy Spirit and His second coming. The responsorial Psalm sings rightly the glory of God, “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.” (Ps.47:6). In the second reading, St. Paul invites us to live a life according our call. “Beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” (Eph.4:1-3). We are invited to pray for the Christian Unity throughout this week. The Gospel explains clearly how Jesus ascended to Heaven after giving His blessings and commanding His followers to proclaim the Gospel of Life and to bring people back to God. We all need to ascend from our petty selfishness and sinfulness to go out beyond our comfortable boundaries and relatedness to be a link person for God. We all have the mandate to teach, preach, and practice the lessons of faith, hope, love, forgiveness, mercy and salvation. May the Lord help us to raise above.
